The kitchen work surfaces were heavily varnished, which was worn and crazed in places, allowing moisture ingress. We stripped them entirely and applied a much more attractive, specialist wax/oil coating. 
bathroom
The bathroom had suffered damage resulting from a persistent leak above, which had caused the plaster skim to fail and lining paper underneath the skim to mould. 
We removed all of the failing material, and re-skimmed the walls (below).
