These compact terraced houses, on what was the periphery of London, were originally built for the skilled working class, responsible for the flourishing of the city during the post-Industrial Revolution expansion. Nowadays, they are often referred to as “cottages”, and I understand why. So many are now extended to the rear to provide substantial kitchen/dining rooms, and they have been reconfigured to provide good bathrooms, but they were originally small, with open fires in each room, and no bathroom/WC. They are lovely, though, and despite many having been pulled around and patched up on a piecemeal basis over the years, if given some attention they are as pretty as a picture and feel like storybook homes. We did the interior, as well as the exterior, of this charming home in Leytonstone, and to revitalise it was a pleasure.
